Quick blog, but your weight affects so many issues in the body. This was a study which showed losing weight can help an obese person — particularly those with diabetes — fight serious infections.

This was presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes 2024:

  • For every 5 point increase in BMI, there was a 30% rise in the risk of serious bacterial infection (pneumonia or urinary tract infection) and a 32% increase in the rise of severe viral infections (flu).
  • They discuss that of those with diabetes 1/3 of hospital admissions are for infections
    • Diabetics are twice as likely to be hospitalized as the general population for infections
    • They are at a high risk of readmission
  • The study was of 500,000 patients in England.
  • THESE ASSOCIATIONS WERE FOR ALL PEOPLE, WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAD DIABETES.
