What do the GLP1s not do? Add better pregnancy outcomes to the list. This study came out of the question- what do these weight loss drugs do to people trying to get pregnant? The number of patients of reproductive age on the meds has skyrocketed. Is there a long term impact on future pregnancies?

This was a study published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, January 2025, “Preconception GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Use Associated with Decreased Risk for Adverse Obstetric Outcomes.”

Study:

  • Retrospective cohort study of women over age 18. 4,000+ women in each arm.
  • Had a GLP-1 agonist within 2 years before a pregnancy vs. those who had a pregnancy with no GLP1 use.
  • Matched for age, race, ethnicity, and history of other medical issues
  • MEDICAL ISSUES:
    • Gestational diabetes
    • High blood pressure in pregnancy
    • Preterm delivery
    • C section rates

Findings?

Those who were on GLP-1 mediations were less likely to have all of these issues.

  • Gestational diabetes: 15% vs 18%
  • High blood pressure 20% vs 23%
  • Preterm delivery 3% vs 4.4%
  • C section rate 17.6% vs 19.7%

Our thoughts at Biohackr Health?

We know GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide and tirzepatide are powerful medications to improve fertility in patients who are obese or have polycystic ovary system. We will do more blogs on these medications and fertility, during pregnancy, and in lactating new mothers as the scientific data comes out.

The data on these medications is pretty incredible. There are few negative effects which are seemingly rare, and a tsunami of goodness to their use in the appropriate patients.

Stay tuned.
