HomeBlogblood sugar and alzheimers. Journal time

Biohacking requires looking at your overall health starting at a young age. We know diabetes is bad. We know insulin resistance and high blood sugars are bad. The length of time you are exposed to these issues leads to consequences down the road. For me its like smoking- you see these young 20 year olds smoking and they have minimal visible health effects. But when they are 40? 60? It hits you like a wall on all fronts. Those daily affronts add up to irreversible effects.

This study published in Endocrines out of the University of Colorado looked at young people with diabetes. What did they find?

  • Young people with youth onset diabetes had preclinical evidence of Alzheimer Disease neuropathology
  • Study was of 50 people – 25 with Type I diabetes, 25 with Type II
  • Ages ranged from 15-27, 59% female
  • They looked for biomarkers associated with Alzheimer disease and cognitive impairment- glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light chain protein (NfL), phosphorylated taurine (pTau181) and amyloid beta.
    • Teens and young adults had lower GFAP, higher pTau, and lower amyloid beta suggesting early and sustained amyloid irregularity in youth onset diabetes.
  • Alzheimers biomarkers increased from adolescence to adulthood in those with diabetes
  • 13 of the patients had brain PET scan to measure density of amyloid and tau in areas of the brain which showed no changes

What does this mean?

It means that brain changes start in teens and early adulthood leading to evident Alzheimers later in life. They suggest that doctors do cognitive testing in those with diabetes, starting early. These changes were seen in Type I diabetes- those that inherited diabetes- but also in Type II diabetes, who are those who are overweight leading to developing diabetes. They talk about 38.4 million people in the US have diabetes, 11.6% of the population, and how that includes 352,000 people under the 20.

Blood sugar being bad is not news to us. There are many who think blood sugar is the root cause of heart disease, cancer, and other issues. We agree. Treat it early. Do things in your life to improve your blood sugar. See blogs on those here: BLOOD SUGAR

Being healthier at age 70 has everything to do with being healthier at age 20. We keep seeing studies which show this. Start now.

How can Biohackr Health help?

Testing. I know we sound like a broken record, but testing lets you know if you are at risk. We have an insulin resistance panel which includes HbA1c, which shows your average blood sugar over the last 3 months.

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. If your BMI is over 27 with a medical issue or over 30 with no other issues, these weight loss medications are shown to help not only with weight loss but with improving your blood sugar profiles.

Ancillary treatments which help with blood sugar. NAD+ is thought to help. Our probiotic uses the strains of bacteria to help lower blood sugar. In the future we will assist with glucose monitoring and metformin.
