You hear about hair thinning with age, but how do you know if you’re affected by this phenomenon? There are many factors that contribute to hair loss. Are you actually losing hairs? Are they fracturing or breaking? Is the caliber of the hair smaller? Some things to look for:

  1.  Your ponytail is thinner. One of the things that happen over time is the caliber of each hair gets smaller as you age. You may see this as a thinner ponytail, or your hair clips aren’t gripping like they used to. So even if the actual number of hairs is the same, since they are thinner your hair will seem less robust.
  2. Your hair part widens. Or you have a receding hairline. Your scalp is more visible. This is due to fewer hairs and thinner caliber.
  3. Clumps of hair in your brush or when you shower. You lose hair every day naturally. But when the loss seems accelerated, that is something to notice. (NOTE: Acute hair loss can be seen post pregnancy, post-Covid infection, and post life stressor. This often seen 3-6 months later). You can look for increased shedding on your hands, your styling products (like flatirons), your pillows/furniture/headrests/clothing at the end of the day.
  4. Increased sun sensitivity on your scalp. The hair protects your scalp skin. If you notice that your scalp feels more sensitive after routine sun exposure, it could mean your hair has thinned (and wear a hat to protect yourself!).

So what can you do? Get on hair loss early! You want to do things which increase blood flow to the area, and block hormonal changes which cause the hair to thin and decrease.

Take photos, particularly of your part or any balding areas. Hair changes are slow. You want to document the changes, which are subtle.
