Sermorelin is a peptide analog of a hormone-releasing growth hormone (hGH). It is thought to help increase human growth hormone levels, which can make you look and feel better. Sermorelin is not putting actual growth hormone into your body. Rather, it stimulates your own pituitary gland to make hGH. Other growth hormone treatments involve synthetic human growth hormone. It is thought sermorelin has fewer side effects because it stimulates your own actual hGH. Higher human growth hormone is thought to:
- Improve muscle mass
- Decrease body fat by stimulating IGF-1 (leading to lean muscle mass)
- Increase energy levels and reduce recovery times
- Improve telomerase activity
You hear of sermorelin being used by many elite athletes in the fitness industry, as well as in terms of biohacking for the body. This use is off-label to improve performance and increase muscle mass. Studies have shown it helps build muscle and add muscle mass. In adults, sermorelin has been shown to increase muscle strength. It may also help with recovery from exercise and injury due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Sermorelin is seen as a performance-enhancing drug and banned by some athletic boards.
When reviewing scientific studies, sermorelin is not well studied for individuals with normal growth hormone levels. There are also people who are growth hormone deficient as children and adults, and giving them GHRH helps.
However, there are interesting uses that have been studied. Studies have been conducted looking at reversing heart damage after a heart attack in animal models, and it has been shown to help prevent damage or even reverse it. There are also studies in mice models showing sermorelin increases telomerase activity, as well as offers reduced oxidative stress in the brain, improved balance, and improved cognition. These all increase life expectancy. Sermorelin therapy was shown to increase testosterone secretion in GH deficient rats.
There can be side effects, and there is a lack of clinical studies to show long-term side effects. The most common side effects seen are flushing, pain at the injection site, dizziness, sleepiness, and headaches. There are some studies that find blocking GHRH is effective against cancers of the breast, lung, and prostate — so use of sermorelin should be considered if you are at risk.
How Can Biohackr Health Help?
We have an at-home Sermorelin Therapy program. We combine it with a monthly InBody scan to analyze your current muscle mass and track changes.
