Thyroid levels are important. When your thyroid is high you may feel jittery, your heart races, and more. If your thyroid is low, you may have weight gain, hair issues, and other symptoms. There have been increasing issues with thyroid generally, and we recommend you should check it yearly.

TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. It is made by the pituitary gland to regulate the thyroid gland production of hormones.  It stimulates the thyroid to make thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3).  Thyroid helps with metabolism (body’s metabolic rate, heart function, digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance) and to maintain energy levels.

  • NORMAL is 0.4 – 4.0 mIU/L
  • HIGH TSH means your thyroid is not producing enough hormones. Why? Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, and some medications are common causes.
  • LOW TSH means your thyroid is making too much hormone. Why? Graves, thyroid nodules, or excessive intake of iodine are common causes.

Thyroxine is T4. It is called that because T4 contains four iodine atoms. It helps metabolism by influencing the rate cells use energy, playing a critical role in growth and development, particularly in the brain and nervous system. It also helps with body temperature and heart rate. T4 is converted by enzymes in the liver and kidneys into T3, the more active form of thyroid hormone. T4 is made in larger quantities than T3.

  • NORMAL: 5.0-12.0 mcg/dL
  • HIGH means you are hyperthyroid
  • LOW means hypothyroid

Triiodothyronine T3. It contains three iodine atoms, which is why it is referred to as “T3.” It is the more active form of the thyroid hormone. It is made by enzymes that convert T4 to T3.

  • NORMAL: 100-200 ng/dL
  • HIGH is hyperthyroid
  • LOW hypothyroid.

You will see on most thyroid panels we also are testing for thyroid antibodies, as autoimmune and thyroid issues are on the rise.
