Folate is super important for pregnant women in avoiding neural tube defects in fetuses.  Also known as vitamin B, folate is key to making DNA and genetic material.

What is the Role of Folate?

  • It is thought to decrease cancer risk if taken before getting cancer.
  • It may help depression.
  • It lowers homocysteine, an amino acid linked to heart disease.

What are Good Sources of Folate?

Folic acid, liver, dark green vegetables, fruits and fruit juice, nuts, beans, peas, and fortified bread and cereal.

Deficiency is rare. Symptoms would be megaloblastic anemia, weakness, fatigue, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and open sores on the tongue/mouth. It’s very important for pregnant women to avoid spina bifida and neural tube defects or premature babies.

As with all vitamins, if looking to supplement you should know your levels. High doses may increase the risk of colorectal cancers.
