A lesser talked about variation of Vitamin B is Pantothenate — known as B5. It is an essential nutrient required by all animals to make coenzyme A, which is necessary to metabolize fatty acids and make (plus metabolize) proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. It helps turn food into energy and break down fats.

Science facts: There is an interesting study in mice which shows that B5 may help immunotherapy in cancer patients. Called “Immunostimulatory effects of Vitamin B5 improve anticancer immunotherapy” (Oncoimmunology, January 2022), it was found deficiency increases the risk of coronary heart disease — particularly in smokers. There is no improved effect after a normal level, as explored in “Association between plasma Vitamin B5 and coronary heart disease: Results from a case control study,” (Front Cardiovasc Assoc, Oct 2022). It may help lower LDL and triglyceride levels.

Sources of B5 include beef, poultry, seafood, liver, eggs/milk, and vegetables like mushrooms, avocado, potatoes, broccoli, nuts, and whole grains. Deficiencies are rare. If deficient, you can notice numbness and burning of the hands and feet, headache, extreme tiredness, irritability, restlessness, sleeping issues, stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, and nausea.
