Hair loss is an issue for men and women, particularly as you age, post-pregnancy, post-Covid, and after major stress or illness. When you start to add medications, one question which you should ask yourself is, “Is this safe? Are there cross reactions I should worry about?” We at Biohackr Health are medical- and evidence-based, so we do worry about these issues.
One medication that is a workhorse and well-proven method to help with hair loss for men and women is minoxidil. This can be done topically, orally, or both. At high doses, minoxidil can be used to treat blood pressure. At low doses, the blood pressure effect is low. It is this effect — the relaxation of the smooth muscles in blood vessels in the scalp — which is thought to help the microcirculation to the hair follicle to stimulate hair growth with minimal blood pressure impact.
Is Minoxidil Safe with Other Medications?
This was a study looking at that specifically, looking at medications which were antagonistic to minoxidil. “Assessing the influence of medications with antagonistic effects on low dose oral minoxidil in patients with alopecia: a retrospective study,” published July 2024, American Academy of Dermatology.
Study:
- Retrospective study
- 71 patients, 60% female
- Antagonistic medications are ones that may disrupt the blood vessel dilation and limit blood pressure drops, like NSAIDS
- Findings? No significant change in median hair width or density was seen between cohorts, and no significant difference in side effects.
Our thoughts?
Great! We love to see what we are recommending is safe and can be used in patients with other issues and medications.
How Can Biohackr Health Help?
We do hair thinning treatments. We approach this from multiple ways: hormone pelleting for men, PRP, microneedling, exosomes, minoxidil. See our hair regrow treatment and general deeper information on hair thinning.
