For those with no attention span, does IV lipid emulsion therapy help fertility? The answer seems to be yes.
This was a study from Clin Exp Reproductive Medicine in September 2021 entitled, “Efficacy of intralipid administration to improve in vitro fertilization and outcomes: A Systematic review and meta analysis.” We love studies where the authors take a deep dive into the current literature and perform a meta-analysis. For any study to hold weight — the more data, the more likely the results are true.
What Were the Conclusions of the Study?
- They only looked at randomized controlled trials. Of 180 studies, only five were found to have randomized controlled trials for a total of 840 patients.
- They only looked at the role of intralipid administration during IVF.
- Analysis was conducted exploring the rates of 1) clinical pregnancy, and 2) live birth. They looked at secondary outcomes like chemical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy, and missed abortion.
Findings?
When they looked at controls versus IV lipid emulsion recipients, they found significant improvements in:
- Clinical pregnancy rate
- Ongoing pregnancy rate
- Live birth rate
There was no benefit in the miscarriage rate in the study. They conclude that IV lipid emulsion infusion may benefit women currently undergoing IVF, particularly if they have had repeated implantation failures or recurrent spontaneous abortion. For the full article, click here.
