What is DIM?
DIM is diindolylmethane, a compound found in cruciferous veggies — think broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and brussel sprouts. These vegetables are awesome because they are chock full of important nutrients like Vitamins C, E, & K, folate, magnesium, calcium, iron, and other minerals. Look at any journal on superfoods and how eating can improve your health, and these are the top of the list. Scientific published articles have shown that eating cruciferous vegetables can lower blood pressure (see VESSEL study 2024) and cancer (studies show lower rates of prostate cancer, colon, possibly lung cancer).
How Does DIM Improve Health?
- Protects cells against DNA damage
- Inactivates carcinogenic substances
- Is antiviral and antibacterial
- Is anti-inflammatory
- Inhibits tumor cell migration (metastasis)
Others think DIM helps support weight loss, enhances energy, boosts mood, supports strong bones and muscles, reduces PMS symptoms, helps balance estrogen dominance, and improves prostate health in men.
So why do we carry DIM if you can just eat your veggies? It is because to get the maximum benefit from DIM, you would have to eat two pounds of vegetables a day.
There is also a strong connection with hormones. As you age, estrogen and testosterone levels change. This balance change can lead to aging symptoms: weight gain, muscle loss, brittle bones, and a feeling of aging.
- ESTROGEN: It is thought that as you age, the level of strong “bad” estrogens increases, rather than the weaker “good” estrogens. Good estrogens block the growth of tumors. In order for estrogen to be used, it must be metabolized. DIM requires a similar pathway, and increasing your DIM level helps stimulate the pathway for good estrogen production and healthy hormone balance.
- TESTOSTERONE: It also impacts testosterone. Testosterone is important to increase muscle mass, stronger bones, metabolism, libido, and mood. DIM helps increase the level of free testosterone, its active form. DIM has been shown in studies to combat prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, new cell growth in the prostate thought to be a precursor to prostate cancer.
