.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is an important hormone produced by the pituitary gland which is critical to reproduction for men and women. It is a gonadotropin, a hormone that stimulates ovulation and progesterone production in women. In men it stimulates testosterone.

In women: LH is crucial for the menstrual cycle. It surges mid-cycle, causing the mature egg to be released from the ovarian follicle in ovulation. There are test strips which show this surge, which is helpful when trying to time sex with ovulation when you are trying to conceive. After you ovulate, LH continues, to help maintain the corpus luteum which produces progesterone to support the early stages of pregnancy.

  • HIGH LH levels: Seen in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and menopause
  • LOW LH: pituitary or hypothalamus issue, associated with infertility or hypogonadism

In Men: LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone. Testosterone is essential for sperm production and the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.

  • HIGH LH: testicular failure.
  • LOW LH: hypogonadism or infertility.
